Zentangle Pumpkins

Description of Activity

We had the students create a zentangle pumpkin using many cool patterns. The lesson started with a Canva PowerPoint introducing what a zentangle is and what makes a zentangle. Then the students practiced drawing two patterns on a rubric, one related to fall and one related to their personal interest or hobby. Then they followed a step-by-step showing of how to draw a pumpkin first w/ pencil to outline, then went over it in Sharpie. After, they filled in all of six sections on the pumpkin with all of their different patterns, including their one fall and one personal. They drew their patterns with crayons. When they had their patterns done, they painted orange and brown watercolor over the pumpkin. Then, when dry, cut out the pumpkin with scissors. As they completed their pumpkin, we played an audiobook called "Charlie Brown, A Great Big Pumpkin." Once they were done, they had to share with a partner and w/ class about their chosen designs.

Extension

For an extension activity, students can reflect on their zentangle pumpkin designs and write a short paragraph or story about what their patterns represent or a story their pumpkin might tell. They can add small sketches or doodles to illustrate their story, then share it with a partner. Finally, the pumpkins and stories can be displayed together on a bulletin board or wall to create a “Zentangle Pumpkin Patch,” allowing students to explain their patterns and connect their artwork to their writing.

My work

On the far left, I drew a flannel-like design. Next to that were leaves for fall. Next was just some fun pookadots w/ my favorite colors. Next to that was ghosts for Halloween because it's my favorite holiday. Next to that were the spiders for Spiderman and the color of his suits. At the top, I just did another fun zig-zag design.
